Types And Uses of Sewing Machine Presser Foot

Publish Time: 2024-04-24     Origin: Site

The presser foot of a sewing machine plays a very important auxiliary role in the sewing process. The presser foot, in conjunction with the feeding teeth, allows the fabric to be fixed and moved on the machine. Due to the different positions of the presser foot devices of various sewing machines, the width of the fabric feeding pressure varies, and there is no interchangeability between the presser foot of different brands. Therefore, before selecting the presser foot, it is necessary to choose the corresponding sewing machine brand and machine type. The material, smoothness, and compatibility with the feeding teeth of the presser foot can all affect the sewing effect.

The types of pressure foot can be distinguished based on their material and purpose. Common presser foot materials include:

Metal presser foot:

Metal presser foot are the most common on sewing equipment. The metal presser foot is durable, wear-resistant, widely applicable, and not easily deformed. The metal presser foot are mostly made of all steel material, with two types of surface treatments: chrome plating and nickel plating. The chrome plated presser foot have a brighter and more wear-resistant luster, while the nickel-plated presser foot have a darker and more resistant surface.

Resin presser foot:

Resin presser foot are widely used in sewing machines in recent years due to their low pressure on the fabric and high friction between the surface and the fabric, making them less prone to slipping. They have obvious advantages in sewing lightweight and smooth fabrics, coated fabrics, leather fabrics, etc. The main advantages of resin presser foot are uniform feeding, low pressure, and no tooth marks. However, the service life of the resin presser foot is relatively short. When using it, attention should be paid to checking the smoothness of the bottom of the presser foot, avoiding burrs and fabric hooks. Do not allow the presser foot and feeding teeth to directly contact the empty machine for operation, otherwise the bottom of the presser foot will wear significantly.

Transparent presser foot:

Transparent plastic presser foot are currently mainly used in embroidery machines, pattern machines, and sewing machines. Transparent presser foot are easy to observe the sewing status.

The use of pressure foot should be selected based on the sewing process requirements. Below are several special pressure foot for different purposes in clothing microfabrication:

Fixed presser foot

The fixed presser foot can set the edge position according to the size of the seam, allowing the fabric to be fed along the edge, ensuring the smoothness of the stitch and the accuracy of the seam.

Roll edge presser foot

The curled edge presser foot is suitable for sewing narrow curled edges of thin materials. This type of rolled edge is very common in summer women's and children's clothing, and it is difficult, poor quality, and inefficient to sew without the use of this pressure foot or specialized pull tube.

Invisible zipper presser foot

When installing the invisible zipper, this presser foot can be used to fit the zipper teeth into the guide groove, and the sewing thread can be tightly attached to the invisible zipper for sewing, ensuring the sewing quality of the invisible zipper and reducing the difficulty of sewing.

Tucker presser foot

Tucker presser foot can be sewn to create regular and beautiful Tucker pleats, which are generally used in the production of thin material women's shirts and skirts.

Seam bead presser foot

Used for placing bead strings, beads, and thin ropes with a diameter of less than 4mm, and can also be used for sewing embedded thread edges on thick fabrics. There are various types of pressure foot for different purposes. In addition to the ones mentioned above, commonly used ones include high and low pressure foot, roller pressure foot, split seam pressure foot, rolling edge pressure foot, etc., which need to be selected according to the needs and fabric type. When replacing the presser foot, the pressure of the presser foot should also be adjusted according to the thickness of the fabric to better match the sewing.
