In 1738, scientist Daniel Bernoulli discovered that air, like water, is fluid. When the winds converge and are separated by the sail, some of the wind attaches to the raised side of the sail (leeward side) and pulls the sail up. In order for the "unattached" air on it to pass through the sail, the sail must bend outward toward the airflow that is not affected by the sail. But such free air currents tend to keep their straight flow and impede navigation. However, the opposite often happens on the windward side of the sail. As more air flows over the leeward side, less air flows over the windward side through the extended space between the raised side of the sail and the free airflow. The wind not only flows faster but can also flow along the raised side of the sail. This part of the relationship between the sail and the wind is called the headwind angle. If the sail is at exactly the right angle to the wind, the sail will fill with wind and generate aerodynamic power all at once.

The angle of sail tack must be very precise. If the angle is kept too close to the wind, the front of the sail will "catch the wind" or swing. If the angle is too wide, the air flowing along the curved surface of the sail will separate and the surrounding air will recombine. Ideally, the separation should not begin until the airflow reaches the trailing edge of the sail. However, as the sail's angle of approach widens, the separation point gradually moves forward and keeps everything after it in the stall area. In addition to maintaining the correct angle of approach to allow the air to pass smoothly, another important factor regarding the relationship between the wind and the sail is that the sail must have the correct curvature to ensure that the air remains attached to the stern. If the curve is too small, the airflow will not bend and will not have the squeezing effect that causes an increase in speed. If the curve is too large, the airflow cannot be attached. Therefore, separation can only occur if the curvature is not too large and the angle of approach is not too wide.
