Unpacking The Options: A Look At The Different Types Of Ton Bags

Ton bags come in a wide variety of styles. The most common ton bags are constructed with U-shaped panels or a round configuration, and may contain a simple PE liner or no liner at all. The way a ton bag is referred to largely relates to its structure: 4-panel, U-panel, round, or its application. The manufacturing of these durable bags relies heavily on specialized heavy-duty sewing machines, designed to handle multiple layers of tough polypropylene fabric. Equipped with reinforced frames, high-torque motors, and robust rotating hooks, these ton bag sewing machines ensure strong, uniform, and consistent stitching, which is critical for maintaining the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of ton bags under rigorous handling conditions.

  • U-shaped Panel Bags

U-shaped panel bags require two seams along two opposite sides to form two panels and a "U" shape. This style of ton bag has become the industry standard in the United States.

  • Round/Tube Bags

Round bags are made from fabric woven on a circular loom. The fabric is woven into a continuous fabric tube and then cut to the correct sized height. The tubular body design is ideal for unlined options of delicate materials. It is also an excellent alternative to the original four-panel bag structure. Capacities up to 4000 pounds.

  • Four-Piece Bags

Four-panel bags are the original polypropylene design. This design requires sewing together four separate pieces of fabric to form a four-panel bag. Capacity up to 4400 lbs.

  • Baffle Bags

Baffles are fabric pieces sewn into the inner corners of the bag to maintain its cubic shape after filling. Baffles have perforations to allow product to flow freely. Baffles also prevent the bag from bulging out, keeping the bag upright and allowing for more efficient use of space. Mesh and tie-down baffles are another type of baffle option, but are less common.

  • Others

Type A Bags: Type A bags are made of untreated insulating fabric. There are no specific requirements for Type A ton bags because they are not suitable for potentially explosive environments and lack electrostatic protection. Flammable solvents or gases must not be present, and they cannot be used to transport flammable products.

Type B Bags: Type B bags are made of insulating fabric, but with a breakdown voltage below 6kV. This requirement prevents the risk of high-energy propagation of brush discharge, which could ignite the dust-air mixture. Type B bags are suitable for use in situations where combustible dust with a MIE greater than 3 mJ is present but flammable vapors are absent. They have a low breakdown voltage. Flammable solvents or gases must not be present in the surrounding environment, and they cannot be used to transport flammable products.

Type C bags: Type C bags are made of fabric with interconnected conductive wires. The bags must be grounded during filling and emptying. They can be used to transport flammable powders and in the presence of flammable solvents or gases, but should not be used if the grounding connection is absent or damaged.

Type D bags: Type D bags are made of antistatic fabric containing a static dissipative agent. This type of ton bag does not require grounding, but it cannot be used if the surface is contaminated or coated with conductive materials.
